While officials haven’t announced a cause of the deadly wildfires in Maui, evidence suggests that Hawaiian Electric’s equipment was involved, highlighting the environmental, social and governance risks that utilities are increasingly having to grapple with.
The wildfires in Maui caused at least 115 deaths, destroyed properties and businesses and resulted in billions of dollars in damage. With mounting evidence suggesting that its power lines might be involved in causing the deadly wildfires on Maui, Hawaiian Electric’s leadership and corporate governance will come under scrutiny over how prepared it was for mitigating high-impact events with a significant environmental and social impact.
